sonus - noun (latin): noise, sound, tone, character, style

Service: Building Acoustics

The acoustic properties of a building have a significant impact on the ability of spaces within it to perform their primary function, and they can also provide a lasting impression of the overall quality of the building.

For example:

  • poor speech privacy within a room can impact negatively on the ability of staff to work and communicate efficiently or the learning process for children in classrooms
  • the transmission of external traffic noise (eg road, rail, aircraft) and building services noise (eg air conditioning) through walls, doors and floors can affect the ability to work, communicate or simply relax within a building
  • performance spaces need to be fit for purpose and the quality of a musical performance can be affected by reverberation times and acoustic reflections

Our work involves the assessment of acoustic related issues within commercial spaces, schools, residences, industrial facilities and performance spaces.

With a pragmatic approach to mitigation and design, we consider and assess:

  • acoustic separation and speech privacy
  • room acoustics including reverberation and acoustic reflection control
  • building services noise
  • external noise (road, rail, aircraft, rain)
  • acoustic assessments for Green Star ratings
  • Building Code of Australia (BCA) acoustic requirements
